Abstract: The purpose of this thesis is to question the representation of the transgender person in photography. It questions the capacity of the medium to represent them through the image of their body as the seat of personal identity and bearer of experience beyond the transidentiary state. The terminology that designates and distinguishes a person as transvestite or transgender has become clearer recently in a significant way, through the way media (cinema and television) representation has evolved. This tendency is verified in photography on the web, in the press and in art in general, with the state of trans’ taking precedence over being a person, leading to a certain confusion. This is therefore an attempt to propose a new way to represent a transgender person, acknowledging the limits of the medium of photography by introducing the necessary dialogue between photographer and subject, with a view to reciprocal recognition.
