Abstract: Using a conceptual theory of surrealism as a poetic and political movement, not limited to a conception of the world but as a truly rebellious state of mind, turned towards freedom, we highlight the strong bonds that unite it with cinema. We will thus try to discern a surrealist
cinema, by asking ourselves how movies express the spirit of the surrealists, by using cinema to this end, and by looking at a surrealist potential of cinema.

Exploring works of historical surrealism as a theoretical foundation, we will focus here on the surrealist potential of cinema over the century, focusing on two specific moments. First, the 1960s in Czechoslovakia, where several young filmmakers seem to have integrated the surrealist influence and use it as an instrument of political criticism. Then, in the contemporary film production, where surrealism seems to have lost its subversive aspect, and where we will study two particular works that nevertheless make it emerge.
